Retro roller skating will return to Robson Square this weekend with the second annual F.U.B.A.R. Roller Jam fundraiser.
“We had such a great response to our first Roller Jam last year that we decided to make it an annual event,” said host Al Lamons, better known as DJ Alibaba. “In 2017, we raised over $1,200 for Make-A-Wish, and it was a fantastic inspiration for us to provide Vancouver another fun, healthy, family-friendly event while raising money for a great cause.”
Set for Sunday, June 17, roller skating newbies and veterans alike will be able to get their groove on to the best in vintage soul, funk, pop, disco and R&B. Lamons, a long-time DJ, promoter and on-air personality, has assembled a lineup of special guest DJs, including DJ Jial 14, DJ Dave, DJ Relik, Earl Da Pearl and the Table Tutors.
The roller jam starts with an all ages/beginner skate from noon until 2 p.m. An intermediate/expert skate (ages 10 and up) will run from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. The event lineup also includes dance performances by Studio 604 and the Van City Skate Squad, face painting and prize draws.
Proceeds from the event will go to Make-A-Wish BC & Yukon. The organization’s mission is to grant the wishes of children with critical illnesses. Lamons has been raising funds for Make-A-Wish for the past 15 years through his charitable organization F.U.B.A.R. — Friends United Beyond All Race.
Admission to Sunday’s Roller Jam is by donation, with a $10 minimum. Adult skate rentals will be available.
