Surrey RCMP are reminding the public to practice safe driving habits after a civilian vehicle collided with emergency services vehicles this week.
On Jan. 16 around 6:15 p.m., a Surrey RCMP patrol car and a Surrey Fire Service truck were struck by a passing vehicle.
Both Surrey RCMP and Surrey Fire Service were attending to a collision on Highway 99 just north of the Serpentine River, when their vehicles were struck by the passing car. In addition, both emergency vehicles had their lights activated and were parked in the northbound bus lane and middle lane when the collision occurred.
The RCMP Officer and firefighters were not injured. However, the driver of the passing car was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
The RCMP report that poor road conditions and speed are considered to have been factors in this collision. As such, the driver was issued a ticket for speeding relative to conditions as well as an unsafe lane change.
“The recent weather across the Lower Mainland has made driving conditions extremely challenging,” says Corporal Elenore Sturko. “Regardless of the posted speed limit, the onus is on drivers to factor in road conditions and slow down when necessary.”
