Parts of Steveston Village could be car-free, one-way for the summer

This would allow more room for pedestrians and for businesses to spill out onto sidewalks and roads during the pandemic

Parts of Richmond's Steveston Village could temporarily become car-free and one-way to allow more room for pedestrians and for businesses to spill out onto sidewalks and roads during the pandemic.

The City of Richmond is this week surveying local merchants and residents about the potential closures and introduction of a one-way system.

If approved, the changes could come into effect as soon as possible and last until the end of September.

The plan includes a three-block closure of Moncton Street from No. 1 Road to Third Avenue.

The north-south avenues, say the city, would remain open, while the north-south lanes would be closed.

Bayview Street, meanwhile, would convert to a one-way system westbound between No. 1 Road and Third Avenue.

And First and Third avenues would convert to one-way northbound between Bayview and Moncton.

The Richmond News has reached out to the Steveston Merchants Association for comment.

The survey closes at 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10. If you prefer to provide your feedback by phone, call 604-276-4049 during city hall office hours (weekdays from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m.).
