Targeted shooting in East Vancouver the city's 12th homicide of 2018 (UPDATED)

Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting in East Vancouver Wednesday night, and they believe the victim was targeted.

Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting in East Vancouver Wednesday night, and they believe the victim was targeted.

According to the Vancouver Police Department, multiple callers to the city's 9-1-1 service reported having heard shots fired in the area of Cambridge and Nanaimo streets.

Upon arriving to the scene, officers found a man suffering from gunshot wounds.

The victim was transported to hospital, however he died a short time later, notes the VPD.

The shooting is Vancouver's 12th homicide of the year.

It is still very early in the investigation, but based on the information collected so far, investigators do not believe there is a risk to the general public, adds the police.

UPDATE Thu 10:40 am: The VPD has identified the victim as 28-year-old Vancouver resident, Matthew Alexander Navas-Rivas.

Navas-Rivas had been with a friend walking their dogs just before 8 p.m. Wednesday night near Cambridge Street and Nanaimo Street when a suspect approached Mr. Navas-Rivas and shot him. The suspect fled in a waiting vehicle.
