City of Vancouver issues extreme weather advisory for this weekend

On Sunday night, Environment Canada expects temperatures to dip as low as -2°C.

The City of Vancouver has issued an Extreme Weather Advisory as the forecast calls for chilly overnight lows this weekend. 

On March 5, the city extended its Extreme Weather Response due to the frigid lows expected through the weekend. As a result, EWR shelters and Powell Getaway will remain open until at least March 8. After that, the city will decide if the response should be extended further. 

Alerts are issued due to weather that, “feels like temperatures at or below 0°C." On Sunday night, Environment Canada expects temperatures to dip as low as -2°C.

The City of Vancouver tweeted that anyone sleeping outside should go to one of the available shelters:

  • Directions Youth Services Centre – 1138 Burrard St Will provide overnight accommodation to 15 youth (24 year of age and under). Open 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. for EWR program. Mats provided after midnight. Pets accepted to a maximum of four (4) animals.
  • Evelyne Saller Centre – 320 Alexander St Operates between 11:00pm and 8:00am Monday through Friday and between 10:00pm and 8:00am on weekends. A variety of food options offered before going to sleep and in the morning. No pets. 40 spots.
  • The Salvation Army Belkin House – 555 Homer St Opens at 11:00pm. Breakfast served at 7:30am. 15 men and 5 women.
  • Walton Hotel Amenity Space - 261 B Hastings Street. Operates between 8:30 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. Pet friendly program, some restrictions may apply.
  • Tenth Church - 11 10th Ave. W (at Ontario Street) Operates between 10:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. Monday through Friday nights. Light refreshments available. Small carts can be stored outside. 
The Powell Street Getaway drop-in centre can also accommodates pets, bikes, and carts, and offers hot beverages and snacks. No reservations are required to enter the warming centre. Located at 528 Powell Street, it will be open from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. 

On March 4, 2019, the Province approved additional operating funding to keep eight temporary shelters and nearly 240 beds open, until March 31, 2020.
