Vancouver police are thanking the public for their help to identify a potential suspect in an attempted child luring that took place in the West Point Grey neighbourhood on Wednesday afternoon.

Police indicated late Saturday evening they have identified a possible suspect in the case.

Investigators do not believe the public’s safety is at risk.

In a release, police said a 12-year-old girl was riding her bike along West 6th Avenue between Trimble and Sasamat streets on May 6 at around 3:30 p.m. when a man in a parked vehicle told her to “come look into my car."  Following the incident, the young girl was scared and rode home to tell her mother.

Police had described the suspect as a white man between 20 and 30 years old. According to the release, the suspect was driving a larger, light grey- or silver-coloured vehicle - potentially a van or SUV - with a roof rack.

“As terrifying a situation like this could be for a young child, she showed her bravery and did the right thing by not engaging with the male,” said VPD Constable Tania Visintin in the release. “We commend her for her courage.”

Police ask anyone with information, including dashcam footage, or "those who have vehicles equipped with factory video surveillance (specifically from a Tesla)," who were near the 4400, 4500, and 4600 blocks of West 6th Avenue around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday to contact VPD detectives at 604-717-0602, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
