BC Ferries has been forced to cancel several Saturday sailings due to adverse weather conditions and high winds which could reach 90km/h.

Sailings have been cancelled between Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay, Tsawwassen to Duke Point and Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay.

Environment Canada has forecast a second bout of powerful winds Saturday morning in Vancouver after a windstorm wreaked havoc in the Lower Mainland Friday.

A wind warning is in place, with strong northwesterly gusts expected to move into the region today which could cause damage and lead to power outages.

Areas of Metro Vancouver, Richmond, Delta and Tsawwassen can expect winds of 90 km/h nearer the water and winds of 50 km/h gusting to 70 further inland beginning late Saturday morning. However, winds should ease late in the afternoon.

“Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage,” Environment Canada states.

“Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions due to high winds.”

BC Ferries says all customers with reservations on cancelled sailings will be advised by email that their booking is cancelled, and where possible, accommodated on a later sailing.

“The safety of our passengers and crew is of primary importance to us,” a BC Ferries alert states.

“We don’t take the decision to cancel sailings lightly, as we know customers rely on us to get to their destinations.

“We will resume service as soon as it is safe to do so.”

BC Ferries says reservations that are cancelled will have their fees fully refunded. Once sailings resume, customers will be loaded on a standby basis in their order of arrival at the terminal, after customers with reservations for their scheduled sailing.
