Two Tickets to Grown Up Movie Star at District 319!
When asked my opinion, I give it.
A few months ago the crew at Canada Screens First Weekend Club were putting out feelers for a worthy Canadian film for their summer DVD Pick Screening, and without hesitation I started championing the virtues of director Adriana Maggs' debut feature, Grown Up Movie Star. Honoured at this year's Sundance Film Festival with a nomination for Grand Jury Prize (World Cinema) it went on to win a special jury prize for Breakout Performance for very-soon-will-be-a-star Tatiana Maslany, who delivered the goods with her frank, funny, honest and memorable portrayal of Ruby.
Coming of age films featuring female protagonists are few and far between, and really good ones - the kind that remind you of you at that age - are on par with unicorns and randomly awesome chance happenings that seem to happen to other people all the time but never you ...
I love a good coming of age movie, if only because I myself have yet to. When told that Grown Up Movie Star had actually been selected I have to say I was really pleased, because for some reason this movie failed to get picked up for wide release - which it totally deserves. I am all for supporting Canadian movies but I am all about supporting Canadian movies that knock it out of the park, as this one does. There's my $0.02, and I encourage you to come down to District 319 on Thursday (director Maggs will be appearing via Skype for a Q&A, too!) to check it out for yourself even if you don't manage to win the two tickets up for grabs.
