Dramatic Family Day fire at Squamish's Tantalus Mall knocked down: Fire Chief

Displaced residents are being helped by emergency services.

Squamish Fire Chief Bill Stoner reports that the fire at Tantalus Mall has been knocked down and firefighters are in the overhaul stage, checking the scene to ensure no hidden fire remains.

Earlier, Stoner told The Squamish Chief the blaze that began late Family Day afternoon required all Squamish Fire Rescue units be dispatched.

All occupants of the building are displaced.

Emergency Social Services has been contacted for those who are displaced by the fire, Stoner said.

There is a special Environment Canada weather alert in effect Monday night due to arctic winds that will see temperatures drop to up to -10 C with the wind chill.

Throughout the afternoon and early evening, there was considerable smoke and fire. RCMP and two BC Ambulances were on the scene.

Police worked to keep crowds back and were closing area streets.

There were reports of power going off in the area.

The District of Squamish asked that people avoid the area while crews are on the scene.
