Some record-breaking heat could be on its way to the Lower Mainland.
Environment Canada Meteorologist Colin Fong tells V.I.A. that a ridge of high pressure is expected to bring temperatures to as much as 10 C above the seasonal average in the region. However, some showery, cooler weather is expected first.
Starting on Friday, May 23, the Metro Vancouver weather forecast includes a high of 17 C and a mix of sun and cloud, with temperatures falling to a single-digit low of 9 C overnight.
Saturday will provide a warmer, sunnier day for locals looking to plan outdoor activities this weekend, with temperatures expected to climb to 21 C.
Sunday is also expected to be dry during the day, but a wet weather system will start approaching the south B.C. coast.
The meteorologist says Sunday will generally have pleasant weather. "The rain or showers won't happen until Sunday night, and the day will be nice and warm with sunshine filtered through the clouds," he notes.
"On the whole, the weekend will be fairly enjoyable."
The system is expected to weaken by the time it reaches the Lower Mainland, meaning only lighter showers are expected overnight Sunday. Monday's forecast includes possible showers and a cooler daytime high of 17 C.
Seven-day Metro Vancouver weather forecast includes record-breaking heat
A ridge of high pressure will start building after the system clears on Monday night, and Tuesday's forecast includes a milder high of 20 C.
Wednesday's forecast includes the potential of record-breaking heat, with weather models indicating a possible 28 C high or about 10 C above the seasonal average.
The previous record for May 28 for the Vancouver area was 25.9 C set in 2017.
To break the all-time heat record for May, temperatures must climb above 34 C, Fong adds.
After Wednesday, the weather models don't show a conclusive forecast. The Canadian weather model's forecast shows elevated temperatures for Thursday, but international models don't provide a strong consensus with it.
"The Canadian model says 26 C, but that could change. I'm leaning towards a cooler solution," he explains.
"It's touch and go as we get into Thursday. As always, check the latest forecast for updates."
June 1 is the start of meteorological summer, and the climate models show strong agreement for above average temperatures. Seasonal averages are a high of 20 C and a low of 12 C.
