It's about to get a lot wetter in the city.

The Vancouver weather forecast is expected to transition from clear skies to heavy rain with showers commencing over the weekend.

Vancouverites woke up to bright sunshine and climbing temperatures on the first day of fall -- but they will likely see a change in the weather starting this weekend.

While there were some minor showers and the threat of thunderstorms in some parts of Metro Vancouver on Tuesday, Sept. 19, the region has been largely dry, with only some occasional wet weather.

Starting on Thursday, Sept. 21, downtown Vancouver is expected to see clear skies, sunshine, and a daytime high of 21 C, according to V.I.A.'s Downtown Centre Weatherhood station

Other parts of the city are expected to see similar, albeit slightly different temperatures. The Granville Island station could see a high of 20 C while the Southlands station shows a possible high of 22 C.

In some places by the water, the forecast shows cooler temperatures, such as Jericho and UBC which are each expected to see highs of 19 C.

Vancouver weather forecast includes a switch to rain

Heading into the weekend, locals should expect more sunshine and clear skies on Friday. However, Saturday's forecast includes a fairly high likelihood of wet weather, with a 71 per cent chance of showers expected throughout the day. Similarly, there's a good chance that Sunday will be wet, with a 62 per cent chance of precipitation.

Starting on Monday, the forecast includes a 92 per cent chance of rain, which will increase to 100 per cent on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Between 15 to 20 mm of rain may fall on each of these days.

In the City of Vancouver alone, there are 14 different Weatherhood stations: UBC, Jericho, Downtown Vancouver, Dunbar, Kerrisdale, Mount Pleasant, Kitsilano, Granville Island, Yaletown, Stanley Park, False Creek, Strathcona, and Hastings Sunrise.
