People were skiing and snowshoeing in Metro Vancouver during the snowstorm

When you're met with snow, break out your snow tools.

What caused commuter mayhem for numerous people was a magical treat for many others on Wednesday (Jan. 17).

A winter storm brought close to 30 cm of snowfall to places at sea level across Metro Vancouver, resulting in bus and SkyTrain delays, traffic jams, flight cancellations, and treacherous travel conditions in some areas.

But many locals used the rare snow event to play outside -- or find other ways to navigate the frosted terrain.

The snow started falling overnight Tuesday and an eager local took to the frosted streets before 7 a.m. yesterday to build a snow person near English Bay, complete with a mini snow person, too.

Snow was falling on the beach-side palm trees when local Ryan Voutilainen recorded a video of the charming scene.

Many other locals constructed snow figures in their yards, while others ventured to city parks.

Environment Canada meteorologist Armel Castellan shared a couple of fun videos of creative designs his family made, including a miniature bobsled track and a driveway sled lane.

A group of Genome BC colleagues crafted a snow person they named "Geno-man."

Snowy Metro Vancouver weather made the ideal terrain for outdoor play

Many other locals made snow people and snow critters in places across the city.

Some people even enjoyed skiing and snowshoeing around the area -- or else they were using their alpine equipment to get to work.

The Metro Vancouver weather forecast for Thursday no longer includes a snowfall warning -- but more snow is expected to fall throughout the day.
