In The Playground for the week of June 29-July 5: Canada Day, a Bboy/Bgirl battle, a live taping of Mr. Young and a contest celebrating Canada's National Parks.

July 1st is Canada's birthday and there is no shortage of parties throughout the city. Here are a couple popular options:

Canada Day at Canada Place - this is probably the largest event in the city with 30+ musical acts, fireworks and plenty more entertainment. Things get underway at 10AM.

Canada Day Celebration at Granville Island - another popular venue with music, a parade and much more. Events start at 8:00 and continue all day.

Me, I'll be at the Canada Day celebration at Clark Park (15th & Knight). If you have young children and live in east Van, you might want to check it out. Basically, they have a bunch of game stations set up where kids get to win small trinkets. It pretty low key, but has a great community feel and the kids will love it. 1-5PM.

On Saturday, Famous Circle is hosting the Filthee Feet 10 Year Anniversary Bboy/Bgirl Battle. The event features a 4on4 battle and a 1on1 qualifier. Doors open at 1PM and the event takes place at Russian Hall. Tickets are $20 at the door and $15 in advance.

YTV's Mr. Young is starting production on season next week and they're looking for folks for the live audience for their tapings on July 8, 15, 22 and 29. "The audience gets to meet the cast, have some pizza, get autographs and learn how television shows are made". The studio is at Market Way and Marine Crossing in Burnaby and will run from 4:30-9:30PM. The event is free and recommended for kids 10+. Email mr.youngaudience@gmail.com to reserve your spot.

Finally, I'd like to tell you about a contest to celebrate the 100th birthday of Canada's National Parks system. If you've spent any time in the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve or the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve you know how amazing the national parks system is. The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) wants you to describe you dream National Parks experience in 50 words or less for a chance to win a trip for two to the Nahanni. That would be a dream experience for me. Enter at ParkDreams.ca.
