I had to think long and hard before posting this image this week. It doesn't fill any of my usual criteria...the subject matter is not awesome, I don't know where the image was made, I don't know what the photographer means by the title, it doesn't make me feel all warm and happy on the inside.
Despite all of these things, this feels to me like an almost perfect image. I only say almost because perfect doesn't exist. I tend to fall in love with things which make ugly things beautiful. There is nothing more depressing than a tract of clear-cut land but without that clear cut this would somehow be a meaningless image. Ivan probably wouldn't have bothered making it if this was a cheery, green, lush environment.
The light is perfect, the muddy road leads our eyes to the horizon and makes us wonder how far this tragic massacre reaches, the diptych is lined up beautifully which makes the clouds form lines which mirror the road and the fallen trees. It's horrific and serene. It's awesome (and best viewed large)

It’s that point in your consciousness where you can feel at one with nature, escaping the trappings of the day-to-day to an almost dream-like place where nothing else seems to exist besides you and your natural surroundings. It is our opinion here at VIA that Vancouver holds a unique place in the civilized world in that reaching this state often requires no more effort than simply pulling off to the side of the road, pocketing your keys and taking a few steps into the forest
