It may sound too strange to be true, but the Coquitlam RCMP are launching launching life-size, cut-out cops to deter speeding and reckless driving.

So, the next time you are commuting through Coquitlam or Port Coquitlam, be on the lookout for 'Constable Scarecrow.'

The metal poster-boards feature an police officer pointing a laser speed-reader. And, for the next two months, these Constable Scarecrows will be in service as a pilot project.

We’ve seen this sort of idea used before in the United Kingdom, but we haven’t seen it used here in combination with scientific monitoring, says Sergeant Quentin Frewing with Coquitlam RCMP Traffic Section.

We think it could work, and it’s a low-cost, good-humoured way to improve our presence and perhaps make people think twice about speeding.

While the cut-out constable won't write you a ticket, RCMP warn that there are plenty of able bodied officers waiting right around the corner to issue tickets to drivers.

Officers aren't revealing the locations of these metal mounties, but stated that they will be placed in problem speeding locations.
