One of Vancouver's oldest Korean restaurants has closed permanently

"Economic challenges have left us no choice but to close down."

After three decades in Vancouver's West End, Korean restaurant Ma Dang Goul (MDG) closed.

MDG's last day of business at 847 Denman St was June 29, 2025, according to a sign on its door.

The longtime Korean restaurant was known for its selection of soups, bibimbap, and rice bowls, among other dishes.

"This decision was not made lightly," reads the sign, noting that financial hardships since the beginning of the COVID pandemic played a role in the business closure.

Similarly, MDG's operators reiterated the closure message online.

"Unfortunately, economic challenges have left us no choice but to close down. Thank you all for the wonderful friendships and memories," reads a post from the business on Google.

The sign on the door goes on to thank the West End for being supportive for 30 years. Opened in 1995, it was one of the oldest Korean restaurants in Vancouver.

"We want to extend our sincere gratitude for your support and patronage over the years. It has been a privilege to serve you and our vibrant West End Community," reads the sign.

"We are incredibly proud of what we have accomplished here since 1995 together."
