It is raining cats at the SPCA in Penticton; however, it has been raining dead birds in Tsawwassen and it is creeping everyone out.
The birds were discovered on Thursday, September 20th, by a local resident who said he saw dozens of them fall from the sky. Apparently, the creatures fell beak downward, straight into the pavement.
As such, it seemed like they were already deceased, and did not die upon impact. Subsequently, he wondered what had caused the mass death, and was unnerved.
Vancouver Is Awesome spoke to Environment Canada regarding the event, who told us that 42 starlings were found at the scene of the incident.
"Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is still investigating the cause of the mortality incident with our network of partner organizations. ECCC enforcement’s officers have collected 42 starlings and are in the process of getting them to the BCMAL Animal Health Lab for post-mortem examination," they said.
"We need to conduct a necropsy to ascertain cause of death. A preliminary diagnosis will be available in the coming weeks."
Officials are hesitant to provide information until the cause of death is certain, as there could be a number of reasons for the mass death.
According to some people, seeing birds represent a number of different omens. According to Exemplore, seeing crows, ravens, and blackbirds bring news of good passage and protection.
Seeing dead birds? Well, that represents metaphysical death and change. With that being said, it doesn't predict whether the change is positive or negative.
