A global research company called Euromonitor International has released a report that identifies the top city destinations around the world.

The report identifies the top 100 cities across the globe based on 2017 international arrivals, and defines arrivals as tourists.

"Arrivals are defined as international tourists, i.e. any person visiting another country for at least 24 hours, for a period not exceeding 12 months, and staying in paid or unpaid, collective or private accommodation," reads the report.

Vancouver placed 71st on the list, and was included in the top ten most visited places in North America. Toronto was also on the list, coming in 52nd.

New York placed first in North America, and eighth in the world.

As for the world at large, Hong Kong placed first, followed by Bangkok in second, and London in third.

The report also mentions some cities to watch, which have made considerable moves in their ranking.

For example, Osaka climbed 113 places between 2012 and 2017 in order to be ranked 30th in 2017. Further, they note that an influx of Chinese travellers to the city could mean that arrivals will grow 13% in 2018. The city could also benefit from the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The report also notes the most visited cities in the Americas are focused on North and Central America; however, it notes that many South American cities, including Buenos Aires, Mexico City and Rio de Janeiro, ranked in the top 100.
