The Canadian Kennel Club has announced the top 10 most popular dog breeds in Canada for 2018.
As the primary registry for canines in the country, the club includes almost 200,000 members and recognizes 175 different breeds.
And while some popular breeds maintained their positions in the exclusive group, there were a couple of changes as well as a new edition.
The Portuguese Waterdog made its first ever appearance among the country's top dogs, placing tenth overall.
As CKC member and established Portuguese Water Dog Breeder Donna Gottdenker states, “Portuguese Water Dogs are a breed full of character, humour, and have a very playful spirit. It should be remembered they are a working dog that needs mental stimulation, socialization, and training. With this done you will have a wonderful companion!”
In addition, the club notes that the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has one of the playful pups, as well as former U.S. President Barack Obama, who has two.
The club also highlights how the French Bulldog has muscled its way into the top five because it makes the "perfect urban sidekick." Not only is it small in stature, but it also has minimal grooming needs.
“The French Bulldog is comical, entertaining and dependably amiable,” states David Berrey, French Bulldog Fanciers of Canada President.
"The first French Bulldog is the dog who gives you so much that the first is often the reason for the second French Bulldog. French Bulldogs are the smallest things to take up the most space in your heart and fills an emptiness you didn’t even know you had.”
In the top four the Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, and Poodle maintained their previous standings.
