Distraught man throwing things from West End apartment falls to his death

A distraught man who was throwing things out of a high-rise West End apartment has fell to his death earlier Saturday and B.C. civilian police watchdog is investigating.

Just after noon Saturday, Vancouver police responded to responded to several calls about items such as TVs and bicycles being thrown out of an apartment window on Bidwell Street near Haro.

From what Vancouver police officers could determine, the items were thrown from a ninth-floor apartment. Officers quickly located and entered the apartment and saw a man inside who appeared to be distraught.

According to a Vancouver police press release: “The man fell from a window and died as a result.”

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO), the provincial civilian-led police oversight agency, is currently investigating.

The IIO investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.

The IIO is asking anyone who saw, heard, or may have footage of, the incident to contact the IIO witness line at 1-855-446-8477.
