BC AdventureSmart Executive Director Sandra Riches says we need to be prepared before heading into the B.C. backcountry.

Warm temperatures, mixed with fresh snow, are creating dangerous avalanche conditions in some areas of the B.C. backcountry.

BC AdventureSmart says inexperienced British Columbians need to educate themselves on the risks associated with outdoor recreation this time of year. According to Executive Director Sandra Riches, there was a 30 per cent increase in search and rescue calls in the summer of 2020 alone. On average, the province receives roughly 1,700 SAR calls each year.

The survival training group also offers a weekly webinar series to educate and inform people before they head out the door.
