SURREY, B.C. — Three regional health authorities in British Columbia are reporting new COVID-19 outbreaks in assisted-living facilities and long-term care homes.

A new, highly transmissible COVID-19 variant that has spread across the United Kingdom has been confirmed in B.C., involving a person who lives on Vancouver Island. It is the province’s first case of a person infected with the U.K. variant.

Daniel Coombs, an epidemiologist the ­University of British Columbia, said he’s surprised to see the presence of the U.K. variant of COVID-19 on Vancouver Island, which has had relatively limited spread of the virus.

COQUITLAM, B.C. — Four people, two of whom are in critical condition, have been taken to hospital after a crash Sunday morning in Coquitlam, B.C. B.C. Emergency Health Services says they received a call for a collision on Highway 1 near Brunette Ave.

VICTORIA — British Columbia health officials are reporting the province's first known case of the U.K. COVID-19 variant. The affected individual returned from the U.K. on Dec. 15 to their home in the Island Health authority.

RICHMOND, B.C. — A pedestrian has died after being struck by a vehicle on Boxing Day in Richmond, B.C. Mounties say they were called at about 5:30 p.m. on Saturday after a woman was struck while crossing an intersection at a cross walk.

NANAIMO, B.C. — Mounties in Nanaimo, B.C., say they're investigating after a dead body was discovered on Saturday morning. RCMP say the body of a 59-year-old man was found at about 5:45 a.m. in downtown Nanaimo. No cause of death has been determined.

SURREY, B.C. — Mounties in Surrey, B.C., are investigating after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle on Christmas Day. Surrey RCMP say they were called to the Newton area Friday at about 12:30 p.m.

VANCOUVER — A volunteer search and rescue team in North Vancouver, B.C., performed an unexpected nighttime rescue on Wednesday -- the first time they were training to use their new night-vision equipment.

VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Coastal Health authority says a COVID-19 outbreak has been declared on a unit at a Vancouver hospital.
