DOWNTOWN EASTSIDE I previously wrote in this column about a collaborative project lead by Emily Carr University Instructor Jean Krabbendam to brighten up the walls of Union Gospel Mission as a way to bring hope, healing and recovery to the clients who frequent the facility.
It was Krabbendam who got the project rolling after the mission approached her about donating art to hang in the alcohol and drug recovery program's building. As a mixed media artist and trained art therapist, Krabbendam understands the connection between art and restoration. And now thanks to her efforts, an entire rotating gallery was created at the mission, including 23 works from 18 notable artists from across the city. The work will remain in place for one year, and on Thursday, Sept. 5, from 7 to 10 p.m. the public is invited to drop by the mission at 601 East Hastings St. to check it out. Admission is $10 and those funds will go to support programs at the mission.
WEST END
Gordon Price, director of the SFU City Program, hosts a planning tour of the city's West End, Saturday, Aug. 24 from 10 a.m. to noon.
Price will offer insights into the neighbourhood, highlighting eight different architectural stages, from fine wooden mansions to functional
wooden walk-ups, not to mention more high-rise towers than any other neighbourhood in Canada. Along the way, Price will explain some of the planning theory and trends that shaped the West End - and some of the lessons to be learned.
Meet at Barclay Heritage Square, 1433 Barclay St., at 10 a.m. and wear comfortable shoes because the walk is two hours long. An umbrella is also a good idea, depending on the weather. The public is invited to take part in a Rosh Hashanah meal at the Lubavitch Centre, 5750 Oak St. Sept. 4, starting at 8:30 p.m. Rosh Hashanah marks the Jewish New Year and occurs on the first and second days of Tishri, the seven months of the Jewish year during which many important holidays take place.
