These next couple of weeks mark the end of many outdoor events and activities across the city. There are also several parks enjoying revitalization through redevelopment that deserve a second look. They include Norquay, located at 5050 Wales St. at Kingsway, which features a new rain garden, playground and sport court. Meanwhile Fraserview Park, located at 7595 Victoria Dr. at East 61st Avenue, has a new zip line and playground, accessible walking and jogging trail and improved landscaping and gardens.
SEPT. 2 TO 11
Golfers and duffers can check out the Vancouver Open taking place Sept. 2 to 4 at the park board's three golf courses, Langara, McCleery and Fraserview. The three courses are offering special Twilight Rates for fall. The city's pitch and putt courses located in Stanley, Queen Elizabeth and Rupert parks are still open. Labour Day, Sept. 5, is the last day for swimming at the city's outdoor pools at Second Beach, New Brighton Park and Maple Grove Park. The outdoor pool at Kits Beach is open until Sept. 11.
SEPT. 4
A local Volkssport club is hosting a non-competitive 5k/10km walk in Stanley Park Sept. 4 and the event is free to new participants, so get out those ski poles and lederhosen. (Lederhosen not a strict requirement.) For more information call Verni at 604-682-8390.
SEPT. 10
Davie Village merchants are hosting an event in support of another village, but this one's located halfway around the world. The It Takes a Village campaign is a one day-and evening-event that brings the neighbourhood together in collective effort to raise funds for Somalia famine relief. Businesses, restaurants and bars will raise funds through donation jars, door proceeds, entertainment, food sales and raffles to help OXFAM Canada and the Canadian government's East Africa Drought Relief Fund. Next Saturday, businesses supporting the initiative within Davie Village will display It Takes a Village posters to mark their participation. Sounds like a no-brainer to me. Eat lunch-contribute to famine relief. Enjoy a glass of wine-contribute to East Africa drought relief. Watch for those posters Sept. 10.
SEPT. 18
Angels Under Our Wings Cocker Spaniel Rescue is holding its first Annual Cocker Walk. The goal is to raise funds to assist rescued cockers with medical care, grooming and boarding. The walk takes place Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. at Shannon Park, located at the corner of West 62nd Avenue and Adera Street. The event includes a walk, dog games, a raffle, prizes and photo opportunities of adorable cockers.
