The Fourth Annual Celebrity Dim Sum Event takes place this Saturday, Oct. 1, at Sun Sui Wah Seafood Restaurant, 3888 Main St., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with proceeds going to AIDS Vancouver-Asian Community Outreach Project.

The project serves Asian people with drug and alcohol abuse problems, with HIV or who are at risk of infection and live in the Downtown Eastside. Goals of the project include reducing the spread of HIV in the Asian community and supporting persons with HIV or AIDS.

Some of the media celebrities serving dim sum to the attendees include Rick Cluff and Cecilia Walters from CBC Radio One, Gloria Macarenko from CBC TV, Steve Darling from Global B.C., and Carol Wang and Bowen Zhang from OMNI News. Several politicians have promised to take part. I just wonder which ones will be taking part in the chicken feet-eating contest and if said feet will be harvested from local, backyard chickens. Tickets are $50. For more information, go to aidsvancouver.org.

OCT. 2

The Community Arts Council of Vancouver celebrates its 65th anniversary Oct. 2 with a tea party at the Museum of Vancouver, a date that coincides with Canada-wide Culture Days festivities.

The Vancouver Arts Council was the first of its kind in North America, and as such has been closely connected to the development of many arts organizations and public facilities, such as the Vancouver Centennial Museum, Queen Elizabeth Theatre and Playhouse, Bard on the Beach and Vancouver Civic Archives. The tea party takes place Sunday from 3 to 5: 30 p.m. at MOV, 1100 Chestnut St. Call 604-682-0010 for more information.

Watch for Jack Poole Plaza to be transformed Oct. 6 from a gathering place with a concrete surface to an urban oasis. As part of the Ford Green Challenge, the auto company is sponsoring the event, which, once complete, will include a pop-up garden. A similar project was recently completed in Paris, France, where French designer Amaury Gallon created four glass bubble sanctuaries, each with a unique environmental inspiration.

In keeping with the green theme, the Green Men will be on hand to meet the public, as will the Food Network's Anthony Sedlack. Imagine, a chance to meet the Green Men without spending $200 for a Canucks ticket. As well, students from the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts will compete to create the best food art using Ford's bio materials, such as recycled plastic pop bottles, foam made from soy and recycled fabric.

The event takes place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the plaza, located at the Olympic caldron site adjacent to the Vancouver Convention Centre.
