Do you have a favourite book from your childhood? Or does one of your children have a favourite?
Now’s the time to share that love of reading with children and youth who might not normally be exposed to a large selection of books.
To ensure kids have access to new books and to bring stories to a new generation of readers, Cory Ashworth, morning host of The Peak 102.7, and Lizzy Karp, co-founder of Rain City Chronicles, launched A Good Book Drive in 2012 with a goal to choose a new recipient each year.
Running now through the month of November, A Good Book Drive asks participants to purchase a new copy of their favourite kids’ book and deliver it to one of many depots set up across the city to be donated to the this year’s recipient, Frontier College
Waiting Room Literacy Pilot Program. The program aims to improve the reading and writing skills of mothers and children before and after their medical appointments at Vancouver’s Oak Tree Clinic. The clinic, a specialized unit within B.C. Women’s and B.C.
Children’s hospitals that provides care for women and children with HIV/AIDS, has invited Frontier College’s trained staff and volunteers to work onsite with their predominantly low-literacy patients.
A Good Book Drive has teamed up with a group of independent retailers, which will each house a donation box where participants can drop off their favorite kids’ book. There, donors will be able to personalize their book, sharing their own story of why it’s special. By permanently placing those stories within the cover of the books, children will read the personal narratives and learn about the impact of that book on someone else’s life.
A Good Book Drive runs until Nov. 30. For more information and a list of drop off locations visit agoodbookdrive.com.
