Community Calendar: Time to celebrate lawn bowlers, female masculinity

QUEEN ELIZABETH PARK The Vancouver Lawn Bowling Club is celebrating its 101st anniversary with an open house April 27 at the clubhouse located above the rose garden at Queen Elizabeth Park.

QUEEN ELIZABETH PARK

The Vancouver Lawn Bowling Club is celebrating its 101st anniversary with an open house April 27 at the clubhouse located above the rose garden at Queen Elizabeth Park. While the game has a reputation for being played mostly by seniors and retirees, the members of the Vancouver club are trying to change that perception and are inviting the public to an afternoon of free lawn bowling and tea. Bowls and instruction will be provided, but you have to wear flat shoes. Even the small heels on loafers aren't allowed, so if you plan on playing bring some flat runners or shoes.

Last year during my visit, I parked by the rose garden on the south side of the park off West 37th Avenue and then followed the path that starts directly next to the pitch and putt entrance. Email [email protected] or visit vanlawnbowling.ca for more information.

STANLEY PARK

While we're on the subject, the Stanley Park Lawn Bowling Club is also hosting an open house, but this one takes place May 4 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. All ages are welcome to try the game for free. The club is located at 2099 Beach Ave. near the entrance to Stanley Park. For more information visit

GRANDVIEW WOODLAND

A new photography exhibit at the Cultch celebrates all things butch.

BUTCH: Not like the other girls is, according to its press release, a "photographic exploration of the liminal spaces occupied by female masculinity in contemporary communities. SD Holman delineates Butch not as oppositional to Femme and Trans identities, but as an inclusive site of resistance to limitations on the way women, gender, and sexuality are still defined." Thankfully the release included a less academic description of the show from the artist. "BUTCH: Not like the other girls are photos of the space between, occupied by the big old bull dykes we know. I say Butch not as dissing Femme and Trans folks, but as a general site of struggle against the limited way that women, gender, and sexuality are still defined..." The show runs now through April 25 at the Cultch, 1895 Venables St.

- Also in Grandview Woodland is a showcase of the hot fashion trends of the season at Got Craft?, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 27 to 28 at the Maritime Labour Centre, 1880 Triumph St. Vendors include Barefoot Contessa, BuenoStyle, Irit Sorokin Designs, Davie & Chiyo, Daub & Design, Herro Hachi, and PassedOutDog. Visit gotcraft.com for more information.
