If recent sunny weather has you eager to get outside, the Stanley Park Lawn Bowling Club is holding an open house with refreshments May 4, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the end of Beach Avenue near the English Bay entrance to Stanley Park. New members are welcome and lessons are held in May and June on Sundays at 10 a.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. For more information, phone 604-563-0345 or email [email protected].

Dunbar

If youre looking for bowls on the West Side, the Dunbar Lawn Bowling Club is seeking new members to give lawn bowling and croquet a whirl. The club offers free instruction during initiation and equipment is provided. The clubs lawn bowling season begins May 5 and rolls through mid September. The open house will happen Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. behind the Dunbar Community Centre, at 3850 West 31st Ave. at Highbury Street. For more information, see dunbarlawnbowling.com.

Citizen urban planners will take to the streets this weekend to honour urban activist and writer Jane Jacobs, who championed the interests of local residents, with Janes Walks. The walks and related events that happen around the world are intended to bring people together to build strong and resourceful communities, instill belonging and encourage civic leadership. At least 18 walks are happening around Vancouver. Theres a walk in Kensington-Cedar Cottage May 3 at 4 p.m. to highlight Gibbys Field, which will receive a Places that Matter plaque from the Vancouver Heritage Foundation that day. Events May 4 and 5 include a bike tour of First Avenue, the CPR right of way and 16th Avenue as an alternative route for rapid transit to the University of B.C., a yoga/storytelling session and a walk through Gastown, Strathcona and Chinatown where participants are encouraged to share their stories about these neighbourhoods. Vancouver TheatreSports League is hosting a Vancouver Loves Boston fundraiser May 7 with five members of Bostons Improv Asylum who are in town to run the Vancouver Marathon. Tickets are $10 and all proceeds will support the victims of the April 15 Boston Marathon bombings, where three people were killed and 264 injured. For more information, see tickets.vtsl.com.

Medical Associations annual, province-wide event, which celebrates the World Health Organizations Move for Health Day, provides an opportunity for patients and doctors to chat while they engage in a healthy activity.
