Members of the Vancouver fire department will be going door to door throughout the city to dispense advice on how to make your home fire safe and to deter malicious fire setting. They'll arrive in full uniform and with official fire department identification to advise on smoke alarm use and care and to check exterior fire hazards. Among other safety measures, the fire department recommends installing motion detector lights in the rear of your home, keeping your yard tidy and your hedges trimmed, disposing old furniture and used cans of paint, keeping firewood and lumber at least two metres away from your house and garage and only putting out your garbage and recycling containers on the morning of pickup.
