CiTR Pop Alliance Compilation, Vol. 4 (Mint)
CiTR 101.9FM’s annual “Fundrive” is back in full swing, and once again the local college/community radio station has teamed up with the venerable Mint Records to release the latest instalment in the Pop Alliance series.
The track list was compiled by CiTR DJs Duncan McHugh, Andy Resto, Eleanor Wearing, Erik Coates, Nellie Stark, and Nicholas Wang-Tretiak and represents an eclectic and frankly charming cross-section of the Vancouver indie music scene.
This year’s comp includes local music scenesters like recent Shindig! winners Late Spring and spunky punks Poor Form, as well as local alt-country heroes, the Shilohs, amongst others.
The album opens with Ora Cogan’s languid banjo and infectious falsetto on “Move”, and just three songs later we’re rocking’ out to the Crazy Horse-meets-X-Ray Spex lo-fi jams of Jerk Jails’ “Extra Flesh”.
Of course, like on any comp, there’s bound to be a few songs that aren’t going to be your cup of proverbial tea, but you’re also going to discover some great new local music and put some new bands on your radar that weren’t there before. And it’s all for a good cause, so there’s that.
This year’s Fundrive is hoping to raise $40,000 to for the non-profit radio station. The Pop Alliance LP release party will double as CiTR’s Fundrive Finale on Friday, March 4 at the Hindenburg, with performances by Ora Cogan, Mourning Coup, Late Spring, Cult Babies, Stefana Fratila, Ace Martens and Jerk Jails (tickets are $10 and available online at BrownPaperTickets.com).
