The 88th Academy Awards offer plenty of high-stakes questions: How will host Chris Rock address #OscarsSoWhite? Who will deliver the best speech, and who will drone on too long? And will Leonardo DiCaprio finally win that golden statue he so desperately craves?
This year, British Columbians have a squad of nominees to cheer, thanks to four nominations all related to The Revenant.
The gritty, critically acclaimed drama – which stars DiCaprio as a 19th-century fur trapper – is the top contender in this year’s Oscar race with 12 nominations.
Among those nominated for The Revenant are BC’s own Cameron Waldbauer (Outstanding Achievement in Visual Effects), Chris Duesterdiek (Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing), Robert Pandini (Outstanding Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling), and Hamish Purdy (Outstanding Achievement in Production Design).
Local winners would join David McIntosh, Steve Marshall Smith, Mike Branham, and Mike Kirilenko from Aircover Inflatables in the BC winners’ circle.
The Aircover Inflatables team – whose green screen airwall was used on Tomorrowland, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Godzilla – was honoured for Scientific and Technical Achievement at an advance ceremony in Los Angeles on Feb. 13.
The 88th Academy Awards airs this Sunday, Feb. 28 on CTV.
