RYAN ROSELL, 21
CiTR 101.9 FM production coordinator, host of Butta on the Bread, CiTRs incoming student executive president and WE cover guy. By Kelsey Klassen
What are you studying? English literature.
Why UBC? Im from the US, but am lucky enough to have a Canadian father who could pass on his citizenship. It was way cheaper to go to school here. Plus the drinking age is 19.
Favourite spot on campus? Sleeping either on the very top floor of Koerner Library or on the upper floor of the pool, aka The Womb.
Favourite memory? At the end of my first year, we had a friend whose final exam got scheduled in the very last slot possible. Most people had been done for a week and he was still studying. A friend and I felt bad and wanted to do something to cheer him up, so we showed up to school on the day of his exam. It was an entry-level Spanish course, so there must have been at least three or four hundred people packed into the gymnasium to take the test. As the proctors were handing out the exams, two masked naked guys sprinted through the gym screaming and jumping over desks. No one ever figured out who it was.
If you could minor in something ridiculous, what would it be? Cheese-making.
Whats keeping it light on campus at the moment? There is someone who paints Jesus Raves all over school. I laugh every time I see it.
Describe your work at Citr: I am the president of the student executive, which means I organize a group of highly active students, and am the liaison between them and staff. I am also the programming and community engagement coordinator. This means I produce all of the advertisements that go on air and coordinate all of the live broadcasts that we do from festivals and other events.
Perks of working for campus radio? More than you can imagine: Being able to wear whatever you want to work, access to over 35,000 CDs in our library, professional development in everything from audio engineering to journalism, meeting bands, seeing shows for free, free beer, meeting people who share common interests, using our sound equipment to host bands at house parties, access to rare vinyl records, going on the air, working at festivals. Our programming director is basically my therapist; the list goes on and on.
How would you improve transit to UBC? There needs to be a Sky Train!
Top five songs youre listening to right now?
Moon Woman by Homeshake
Numbers on the Hoard by Jonwayne
Sylvan Tragedy by Gal Gracen
Cooking Up Something Good by Mac DeMarco
Hedron by BadBadNotGood
What is a must-buy for you for school? Cuisinart blender. Its far superior to the Magic Bullet and will fulfill all of your soup and smoothie needs.
Are you dorm or off-campus? Off-campus. You cant live where you work.
Favourite class? World Literature with Emily Somers.
If you could have a band follow you around campus between classes, who and why? I would have Chris-A-Riffic following me around with his piano on wheels. I never leave a conversation with that man feeling blue.
Biggest college cliché? People who use Facebook in class.
