Big or small, renovations are stressful. As a designer, I am inherently aware of the importance of finding a team that I can align with when it comes to renovations or custom builds, and the same goes for homeowners looking to tackle a new project. It’s not just a matter of finding someone you trust to stay on budget and meet the expectations you’ve set out before the work begins – working with the right team means collaborating with a reputable builder or contractor on the overall project vision, and connecting with those that harmonize with your communication style and values.
For the third year in a row, Refine & Design Custom Homes & Renovations has taken top spot in Westender’s Best of the City awards. “Winning Best in City three years in a row means so much to myself and the whole Refine & Design team,” says owner/operator Sam Wainwright. “Our integrity and reputation for being good people and doing good work in the construction industry – where so many problems can occur everyday – means the world to [us].”
The company’s story begins over a decade ago, with a reputation for creating unique lofts and living spaces. Since the company’s inception, though, their portfolio has grown to include more traditional projects, as well as full home renovations and custom new builds. Refine & Design has also expanded into commercial design, responsible for the stunning aesthetics of some of the city’s top nightclubs, restaurants and even sound studios.
Not one to hog the spotlight, Wainwright credits much of his company’s success to surrounding it with the right tradespeople. “The secret to our success is based on choices. We choose to work with quality tradespeople who have a proven eye for detail. They are tried and tested in not only their ability to perform their work at the highest level, but also in their ability to relate to the caliber of clientele we attract.”
When asked what his favourite part of the job is, Wainwright says: “Being creative, overcoming challenges and never saying ‘This is not possible’”.
After all, exceeding expectations is the new meeting expectations.
