Some people call them specialists. Others refer to them as artistic technicians. Reel People likes to think of them as motion picture magicians who conjure an essential je ne sais quoi every time they wield their wand of choice, be it a make-up brush or a digital editing tool.
On Saturday night, these behind-the-scenes superstars – hair and make-up artists; costume, sound, and production designers; editors; visual effects teams – were honoured at the first of the three 2016 Leo Awards ceremonies.
The Leo Awards recognize excellence in the British Columbia screen scene. Saturday’s festive affair – held on the 34th floor of the Hyatt Regency Vancouver, and informally referred to as the "craft awards" – was hosted by Kalyn Miles, a Leo Awards veteran and actress-comedienne.
In the motion picture category, Charlotte’s Song – a Depression-era reimagining of The Little Mermaid that premiered at last year’s Vancouver International Film Festival – led with three Leo wins, including Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Make-Up.
The big winner of the night was R. L. Stine's Monsterville: The Cabinet Of Souls, which won all five awards in the Television Movie category.
See the complete list of winners below.
The Leo Awards continue on June 4 & 5. The ceremonies aren’t broadcast, but Reel People will live-tweet both nights (@sabrinarmf). Watch this space for red carpet exclusives and next-day results.
