A handful of Vancouverites will rep the local industry on the national stage when the 2016 Canadian Screen Awards are handed out in March.
The nominees for the 2016 Canadian Screen Awards – which celebrate achievements in the Canadian film and television realm – were announced on Tuesday morning. Room led the feature film category with 11 nominations, while critically acclaimed science fiction drama Orphan Black topped the television category with 13 nominations.
As for nominations with Vancouver roots, here are some highlights:
-It was a good day for DHX Media. They have four locally made productions gunning for Canadian Screen Awards: Endangered Species, Slugterra, Kate & Mim-Mim, and Dr. Dimensionpants. The four series received a total of seven nominations, including Best Animated Program or Series, Best Direction in an Animated Program or Series, and Best Preschool Program or Series.
-Two Vancouver news shows are up for Best Local News Cast: CTV News Vancouver at 6 and Global BC News Hour. CBC News Vancouver’s Andrew Chang is in the running for Best News Anchor, Local.
-Omnifilm Entertainment’s Ice Pilots NWT and Jade Fever are both nominated for Best Factual Program or Series.
-Force Four Entertainment’s Emergency is up for Best Factual Program or Series.
-VIFF 2015 highlight Tricks on the Dead: The Story of the Chinese Labour Corps in WWI is up for several awards, including Best History Documentary Program or Series, Barbara Sears Award for Best Editorial Research, Best Photography in a Documentary Program or Factual Series, and Best Production Design or Art Direction in a Non-Fiction Program or Series.
-It’s no longer in production, but CBC’s edgy Strange Empire managed to receive a number of nominations, including Best Costume Design, Best Photography in a Dramatic Series or Program, Best Performance by an Actor in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role (for Aaron Poole), and Best Achievement in Casting (for Jackie Lind).
-Crime procedural Motive is nominated for Best Photography in a Drama Series or Program, Best Achievement in Casting (for Maureen Webb and Colleen Bolton), and two nominations in the Best Performance in a Guest Role, Dramatic Series category: Brendan Meyer and Billy Boyd. Kristin Lehman is nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role.
-The quirky music dramedy Songs She Wrote About People She Knows received nominations in three categories: Achievement in Costume Design (for Arabella Bushnell), Achievement in Music - Original Score (for Chris Gestrin), and Achievement in Music – Original Song (for Kris Elgstrand).
-Kyle Rideout and Josh Epstein received a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for Eadweard.
-Hadwin’s Judgement is in the running for the Ted Rogers Best Feature Length Documentary Award.
-Both Adrian Holmes and Jared Keeso are nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role for 19-2.
-Jenn Robertson is up for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Supporting Role or Guest Role in a Comedic Series for Schitt’s Creek.
-Alex Levine – a graduate of UBC’s film diploma program – is nominated for Best Writing in a Dramatic Series for Orphan Black.
The 2016 Canadian Screen Awards will handed out over three ceremonies in Toronto in March. The gala will be broadcast on CBC Television on March 13. Norm MacDonald will host.
