Summer is the time when the citys streets come alive with music and dancing; main arteries close to cars for festivities and our favourite local musicians busk in the sunshine. This everyday access to some of the West Coasts great talents is often taken for granted in the rush to get from Skytrain to beach or store to store, but those who pay close attention might notice someone missing on our sidewalks over the next few weeks.
The soulful sounds of David Morin wont be echoing down the corridors of Granville and Georgia as per usual, and for good reason hes currently wrapped-up in-studio recording an album.
Even better news for fans of the multi-talented loop-pedalist is that he is coming out from under for a free show as part of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival (June 22 to July 1). How a musician only just recording his first album gets tapped to play one of the citys world-class music events is a testament to the buzz he has created with his one-man band, so the chance to see him with his trio is an added treat. And with his highly anticipated album almost finished, expect him to roll out pitch-perfect songs that have been tweaked and tested for years, combined with some sizzling new tracks.
My album makes me feel a sense of relief... like I have a huge secret that Ill finally be able to get off my chest. The sound we have created is reminiscent of Dangelos Voodoo record and Raphael Saadiqs Stone Rollin so expect to bop your head, and sidestep.
Known for making speakers melt (or make-out, depending on the vibe of the venue), his voice is a stand-out on countless collaborations with other local musicians. In fact, one of the reasons Sizzle Chest (so nicknamed for his penchant for T-shirts with plunging Vs) has lasted so long in Vancouvers often thankless music scene is his enthusiasm and support for his peers.
I would love to catch George Benson because he is a guitar god; Janelle Monae because she is one of the best vocalist around right now. That reminds me, Im gonna check out Dawn Pemberton and The Boom Booms as well. Kyprios is a no-brainer also, but there are so many amazing performances coming up... I dont know where to start really, he says with a laugh about the stacked jazz fest roster.
If we could advise one thing leading up to his show, its to learn the line Nothing will grow if its not from the soul; guaranteed youll be singing it before the evening of June 27 is over. You can catch the David Morin Trio at the Fairmont Pacific Rim at 7pm. CoastalJazz.ca
