Woolworm
Everything Seems Obvious
Hockey Dad Records
Woolworm are Vancouver’s connoisseurs of fuzzed-out hooks and ‘90s alt-rock sensibilities. On their latest EP, the short and mighty Everything Seems Obvious, they tug on your proverbial heartstrings with four songs of pure, blissed out “blanket-rock," a term they coined to summarize their sound. Opener “Useless” could easily pass for Blue-era Weezer or early Dinosaur Jr., hitting that sweet spot between dissonant distortion and well-crafted melodies. On “I Truly Do Not Mind," vocalist Giles Roy sings “You don't kiss me for the camera anymore / In every photograph you just look bored," encapsulating the quintessence of the ‘90s alt-rock movement by sounding both passive and heartbroken.
Despite the decadal references, this is no throwback EP. Woolworm’s ability to write great, catchy standalone songs is what separates them from the rest of the grunge revivalists.
