Top 5 things to do this Friday in Vancouver

Feb. 20, 2015

Get the silent treatment: Celebrated Vancouver Film School dropout, hockey lover and Mongolie Grill enthusiast Kevin Smith comes back to town with sidekick Jason Mewes with their Jay and Silent Bob Get Old podcast and tour, which hits the Rio Theatre tonight as part of the Northwest Comedy Fest.

Get in your cups: The 37th annual Vancouver International Wine Festival pops its first official cork of 2015 tonight at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver with the annual Bacchanalia Gala Dinner and Auction. Nine wines will be paired with a five-course meal to kickstart the 10-day celebration of fermented grape juice that now doubles as a fundraiser for Bard on the Beach.

Get an adrenaline jolt: As part of the ongoing Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival, renowned adventurer Will Gadd hosts an evening of films showcasing the Great White North’s great outdoors at North Van’s Centennial Theatre. Films topics include ice climbing at B.C.’s Helmcken Falls and paragliding across the Rocky Mountains.

Get rocking: 2012’s Juno-winners for Group of the Year and a band handpicked by supergroup Them Crooked Vultures to open for their Toronto gig, the Arkells play the Commodore tonight in support of the new album High Noon. Local synth-rock duo Dear Rouge open.

Get some chutzpah: Reggae bands typically make a big fuss about heading to Zion but Zvuloon Dub System is actually based there. Israel’s best known reggae band bring their fusion of Jamaican rhythms with Ethiopian jazz, American soul and Middle Eastern mizrahi to the Imperial as part of the ongoing 2015 Chutzpah Festival. Brooklyn-based psych-pop band Twin Wave open.
