Top 5 things to do this Friday in Vancouver

June 5, 2015

Get levitated: Levitation Festival, the local incarnation of the long-running Austin, Texas freakshow, launches tonight in various venues around the city with sets by A Place to Bury Strangers, Drenge, The Warlocks, Waingro, Peregrine Falls (below) and Sun Ra’s Star System.

Get laughing: Comedian and podcast host Nikki Glaser, who just got the good news this week that Comedy Central has greenlighted her sex-themed talk show "Not Safe With Nikki Glaser," will be working blue tonight at Yuk Yuk’s.

Go on a gender bender: The second annual Femme-Stravaganza, “an all-genders, queer and trans* centred femme-fabulous singing extravaganza,” kicks up its high heels tonight at the York Theatre.

Get thee to Vanier Park: Bard on the Beach begins its 26th season tonight with a preview performance of The Comedy of Errors, a slapstick farce set this time in the world of steampunk. The other plays at the annual outdoor Vanier Park theatre fest are King Lear, Love’s Labour’s Lost and Shakespeare’s Rebel.

Get wasted: Music Waste, which first began as a punk rock antidote to the now-defunct Music West, turns 21 this year, old enough to legally buy a beer down in the States. This year’s edition kicks off tonight, and participating bands include B-Lines, Peace, Garbage Mountain, Shawn Mrazek Lives!, Les Chaussettes, NEEDS, Supermoon, Energy Slime, Woolworm, JP Carter and OK Vancouver OK, among many others.
