Top 5 things to do this Monday in Vancouver

Feb. 23, 2015

Get jazzed: Some of the best aboriginal singers and musicians currently residing on unceded Musqueam territory join forces for an evening of jazz and R&B standards tonight at Ironworks Studios as part of the ongoing 14th annual Talking Stick Festival.

Get more punk: Can you easily recall such nuggets of information as, say, which Beastie Boy is married to Bikini Kill's Kathleen Hanna, what Vancouver Island tourist attraction Kurt Cobain visited as a young lad or who the opening acts were for the Clash’s North American debut? Then be sure to put your money where your mouth is and head to the Biltmore Cabaret tonight for Punk Rock Trivia Night, cheap pizza and a set by Poor Form.

Get some glory: See some of the most elaborate fight choreography since the Sharks and the Jests rumbled in West Side Story when Shay Kuebler wraps up the world premiere of his martial arts mashup GLORY tonight at the Norman and Annette Rothstein Theatre as part of Chutzpah! Festival. Inspired by his passion for action films, Kuebler takes on the complexities of violent behaviour and its glorification in modern pop culture.

Get a history lesson: The fictionalized life of Dr. Martin Luther King may not have got the love it deserved at last night’s Academy Awards ceremony but going to check out Katori Hall’s play The Mountaintop is one way to help restore the balance. The last night on earth of the civil rights leader is reimagined in director Janet Wright’s production running until March 14 at the Arts Club’s Granville Island stage, which sees MLK receiving room service delivered by an attractive maid with a hidden agenda at the infamous Lorraine Hotel in Memphis where he was assassinated.

Get amused: Noted funnyman, Stop Podcasting Yourself co-host and acclaimed beard painter Graham Clark hosts his weekly Laugh Gallery stand-up round-up at the Havana on Commercial Drive starting at 9 p.m.
