Top 5 things to do this Saturday in Vancouver

March 28, 2015

Get slammed: Spoken word star, anti-bullying poster child and neckbearded Renaissance man Shane Koyczan steps up to the mic at the Vogue tonight to perform from his upcoming new album and graphic novel (with illustrator Gareth Gaudin) entitled Silence Is A Song I Know All The Words To.

Cheer for the Caps: Fresh from road wins against Chicago and Orlando, the Whitecaps return to BC Place today to kick off their defence of the Cascadia Cup against rival Portland Timbers. The game gets rolling at 5 p.m.

Cheer for the Canucks: The Vancouver Canucks, fresh off a dispiriting loss to the woeful Avs, take on the San Jose Sharks, a team who badly need the win tonight as they try to keep their post-season hopes alive. The puck drops at 7 p.m.

Hodor: Only knowing Game Of Thrones through the HBO series rather than 66-year-old George R.R. Martin’s worryingly unfinished series of novels, I’ve no idea why tonight’s show at the Rio by comedy troupe Tourettes Without Regrets is called “Game of Thrones Live: Hodor’s Revenge.” Last we saw the inarticulate friendly giant on TV, he had escaped an attack by animated skeletons and was taken with Bran and Meera to visit a three-eyed raven. Whatever his need for revenge, the night sounds like more fun than an epic rap battle between Hodor and Groot.

Get salty: Get a taste of Gulf Islands living without paying hefty B.C. Ferries fares when Salt Spring in the City returns to Heritage Hall for the second year in a row and with more than 40 vendors from bucolic Salt Spring Island hawking their homemade art and wares. It’s just $3 to enter with partial proceeds going towards Save On Meats sandwich token program.
