Top 5 things to do this Thursday in Vancouver

Feb. 19, 2015

Get your goat: The International Village Mall is the place to be to celebrate the end of the Year of the Horse and the beginning of the Year of the Sheep. (Or possibly the Year of the Goat, there seems to be some confusion.) In any case, the four-day free exhibit, featuring live performances and all the Chinese lunar new year merchandise you could ask for, kicks off today and wraps up Sunday with the annual parade, through the streets of Chinatown that typically features over 3,500 participating performers and draws ten times as many spectators.

Get yogic: Ever wonder how an ancient form of exercise and meditation practiced exclusively by men for countless centuries somehow became such a big hit primarily with women in the past few decades? Find out through the documentary Awake: The Life of Yogananda 4:30 p.m. at Vancity Theatre the savvy swami who helped spread the word about the benefits of yoga to the Western world.

Get preached to: Pulitzer-winning journalist, author, Kevin O’Leary foil and accused plagiarist Chris Hedges gives a talk about the role of civil disobedience as a means for creating social and political change tonight at St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church.

Get in front of a TV: The Canucks travel to New York City to take on both their former coach and a team that thumped them 5-1 last time they met in December. Rookie defenseman Alex Biega scored a goal in his NHL debut Monday night in a 3-2 win over the Wild, so hopefully he’ll follow in the footsteps of fellow newbie Ronalds Kenins, who followed up his own first game in the big leagues earlier this month with two more the following game. The puck drops at 4 p.m.

Get transported to a galaxy far, far away: Nerd’s nerd Charles Ross, last seen on Vancouver stages doing his One-Man Lord of the Rings Trilogy, returns with his One-Man Star Wars Trilogy, a show first launched way back in 2002. More fun than all three post-Return of the Jedi films put together, Ross is truly a force of nature as he re-enacts the first three films of the franchise all without props or special effects in a show that closes tonight at Performance Works Theatre.
