March 4, 2015

Get competitive: ITSAZOO, the folks behind last year’s award-winning Killer Joe, present Sebastian Archibald’s new satirical play The Competition is Fierce set in a dystopian future where corporate drones are forced to literally fight for their careers. Running until March 22 and described by two of its actors as “The Hunger Games set on Wall Street” and “UFC mixed with The Office,” the preview kicks off tonight at Renegade Studios’ Shop Theatre and features gory violence, coarse language and more full-frontal nudity than you can shake a makeshift weapon made out of office supplies at.

Get a bit of fun.: Grammy-nominated musician Jack Antonoff of fun. fame kicks off a North American tour for his other band, Bleachers, tonight at the Rio Theatre. Joywave, Night of Terrors Of 1927 open.

Get inspired: The tenth annual Vancouver International Women in Film Festival has its opening gala tonight at Vancity Theatre with a screening of Shonali Bose and Nilesh Maniyar’s Margarita, with a Straw, about an Indian woman with cerebral palsy who moves to New York City and embarks on a journey of self-discovery and sexual awakening. Bose and Maniyar participate in a post-show Q&A via Skype, and cinematographer Anne Misawa will also be in attendance to answer questions.

Get instrumental: Multiple Grammy-winning Quebecker and atmospheric music pioneer Daniel Lanois plays the Commodore in support of his new, all-instrumental album Flesh and Machine. Rocco Deluca opens.

Get tyrannical: Seven Tyrants Theatre’s production of avant-garde musical Mozart & Salieri, adapted from Alexander Pushkin’s classic tale of musical genius, professional jealousy and murder, premieres tonight at Jericho Arts Centre.
