If you’ve been waiting for your chance to dunk the mayor, you’ll get your shot at the annual Connaught Heights Elementary School Spring Carnival.
Mayor Jonathan Coté will be in the not-so-hot seat between 7 and 7:30 p.m. at the fair’s dunk tank on Friday, June 7.
“I’m looking forward to getting my bathing suit out, to support the festival,” Coté told the Record.
It has been a few years since he’s participated in a dunk tank, he said.
Dawn Emery, chair of the Connaught Heights Parent Auxiliary Committee, said getting the mayor on board was a stroke of good luck.
“My family went to watch him wrestle and I said, ‘My kids loved watching you wrestle, you should come to our carnival and do the dunk tank,’ and then the next day, they’re like, ‘yes,’” she said.
The event is a popular one and an important fundraiser for the PAC, she added.
“Generally it’s a great turn out,” Emery said. “It’s our highest grossing fundraiser of the year. We pretty much earn all of the money we need for the next year’s activities and events from this.”
The PAC funds everything from Valentine’s Day skating trips to day planners to monthly breakfasts to field trips, she said.
“It’s introducing kids to something they wouldn’t normally go to or maybe not have the funds to do, and then everyone is equal and everyone can enjoy those things,” Emery said of the field trips.
The fair will also have carnival games with gift card prizes, an NHL shootout game, a petting zoo, a Star Wars photo booth, a cake walk, concession stand, barbecue, and cotton candy. And there is a $1,000 prize raffle.
“It’s just really fun stuff,” Emery said. “There’s just something for everyone. It’s just a really nice community building event, and you can really feel it when you’re there.”
Tickets for games and food are cash only. The fair runs from 5 to 8 p.m. at Connaught Heights Elementary School, located at 2201 London St.
