I finally got around to editing a chunk of video I shot while flying a tiny beginner's drone at Oak Park in Marpole/Oakridge. The flight was from last October, as you can see from the trees.
I got interested in drones last summer when I purchased a Hubsan X4 quadcopter. It's small, fits in the palm of your hand, and as these things go inexpensive. With shipping (it has to be ordered from China) and customs costs and some spart parts it came to about $120 all told. My model was a bit more expensive because I opted for one with a camera. Models without the camera are maybe half the price.
In doing my research I learned two things: 1. start out small and cheap. That way you're not risking a thousand dollar machine to your ineptness. And the reason: 2. you will crash. A lot. These are not easy things to fly.
The video shows a flight in which I did not crash. But I also went far higher than was smart. The wind picked up the little thing and drove it west. I got great views, but I wouldn't risk it like that again.
More on this as I learn more.
