My top three Courier reads this week include stories of bravery, Allen Garr's further examination of the mayor of Burnaby, and words we can do without.
Pat Johnson's Pacific Spirit column told the story of a Vancouver woman who credits her existence to a Japanse diplomat whose work, against the orders of his own government, enabled her late mother and many other Jews to escape the Holocast during the Second World War. It's a reminder that individual acts of courage both happen and do make a difference on the lives of individuals in ways that can't be predicted.
Columnist Allen Garr provided more detail this week about Burnaby mayor Derek Corrigan and how he's almost the only Lower Mainland politician to oppose the TransLink plebiscite proposal. In a part of the country where our politicians have become ahistorically bland (for professional reasons I miss the likes of Barrett and Vander Zalm), Corrigan is at least interesting. Judging by his lengthy and quick responses to Garr and commenters, he also seems to have a lot of time on his hands.
Finally, nosh, natch, nom nom. K&K wants to expunge them from our vocabulary. Yes.
