The hit series GIRLS on HBO is back for a third season. The show has been dubbed as the modern day Sex and The City minus the Manolos and adding a raw sense of neuroticism that grows out of real girls trying to make it. The premise of the show surrounds four friends in New York City who are just trying to make it through life. Hannah played by Lena Dunham is a struggling writer who’s been cut off financially by her parents. Marnie (Allison Willams) is the responsible one who breaks up with her long-term boyfriend in search of a life that’s more fulfilling. Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) is the wallflower who struggled with being a virgin in her 20s’ and Jessa (Jemima Kirke) is a free spirit in more ways than one.

Lena Dunham has challenged audiences throughout the seasons to a brassy view of what most people would consider a “chubby” body on television. A candor depiction of sexual practices by Hannah’s boyfriend Adam has also been portrayed throughout the seasons. Non-conventional ingenuity and brutal honesty has certainly earned this show its keeps for many viewers.

Season three of GIRLS picks up where the girls left off last season. Marnie played by Allison Williams struggles to cope with her breakup with Charlie, Jessa’s thorny personality pushes the boundaries of others in rehab and Shoshanna is trying to get a grip in school. In a reversal of roles, Hannah becomes the maternal figure for the rest of the girls and lands a contract as a writer with her eccentric boyfriend Adam by her side. Big questions for most viewers going into season three are: Is Shoshanna aiming to get back together with her ex this season? Will Hannah finally find success as a writer in New York? Finally, will Marnie quit her one-woman pity party and get it together?

While most people may be expecting an explosion of trends on the show to add to their wardrobe, the season premiere shows an understated theme as a reflection of each character’s emotional state. Teasers for the show appeared to have a heavy theme of fashion starring Jenna Lyons (creative director of J Crew) in at least one episode and the glamorous makeover of their season three poster. HBO was not lost on connecting viewers to each character with Jessa pairing a gown with combat boots.

GIRLS has also earned the approval with the queen bee of the fashion world Anna Wintour. New York Magazine announced yesterday that Lena Dunham is set to be on the cover of Vogue for their February issue with a heavy emphasis on a dedication to GIRLS.
