Laneway column strikes a chord

To the editor: Re: "When laneways were so much more," March 1. Terri Clark's column struck such a chord in me. I, too, cried when the charming house beside us was demolished along with a delightful garden, many beautiful mature trees and huge rhodos.

Terri Clark's column struck such a chord in me. I, too, cried when the charming house beside us was demolished along with a delightful garden, many beautiful mature trees and huge rhodos. I now look at a muddy and denuded space with a half finished, massive house with an equally large garage the size of a good sized cottage. There goes more light in our north facing garden as the eastern sun will not grace that part anymore. I recently read a line in a novel (about another country) which seems to sum up what is happening to Vancouver: "Now our coast is vandalized by concrete and can never be returned to nature."

Somehow this is perceived as progress and we must adapt. Just because it's newer, taller and bigger doesn't mean it's necessarily better.
