Letter: Downtown development needs more thought

Re: “Architects reshape the style of downtown,” Nov. 15.

I take exception to this story. The nonstop construction has made the downtown area virtually unlivable with the noise and debris and other inconveniences. The condos that are being built are going to be affordable only to people earning higher incomes and the increased crowding and density, rather than creating community, is only going to further drive people apart.

Any further construction and development in the downtown core, and notably in Downtown South (where I live) will need to be done thoughtfully and with great care so as to make the area friendlier to families and to people with a full range of incomes.

This is not happening so far and unless the tide turns on this nonstop development mania our quality of life is going to be the worse for it.

We don’t need another ghetto for well-heeled yuppies in Vancouver.  We need real neighbourhoods with affordable shops and services that will serve everyone who lives here regardless of income. Development is out of control and it needs to be reined in.
