Re: "TaxiSaver changes worry seniors," June 15.
The decision on the TaxiSaver program is on hold. I stated this fact at TransLink's Annual General Meeting on May 30 and reiterated it again directly with stakeholders on June 12. We have started a consultation process to work together with additional stakeholders, TaxiSaver users, HandyDART users as well as seniors and people with disabilities, who use the conventional system. We will have open, transparent and meaningful dialogue about concerns and ideas on the TaxiSaver program and accessible transit needs.
In addition, I personally met with the chairs of the City of Vancouver's Persons with Disabilities Advisory Committee and Seniors Advisory Committee on June 11, to listen to their concerns directly and reiterate my commitment to working together on solutions. TransLink staff will continue this consultation through the summer and fall, and take the time needed to hear from all stakeholders. No changes will be made to the TaxiSaver program while we go through this process.
An accessible public transit system is core to our mandate and we strive to make it seamless and inclusive for everyone. We have made significant investments to improve accessibility for seniors, persons with disabilities, new Canadians and youth and aim to make the system better for our users. The board will consider all the feedback we get through this process before we decide how to move forward on the TaxiSaver program and all accessible transit needs.
